Osun Truck Driver Remanded Over Alleged Manslaughter.
An Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of a truck driver, Adebayo Olayinka, at the Ilesa Correctional Centre following allegations of manslaughter and dangerous driving, which reportedly led to the death of one Adebayo Tajudeen.
The ruling was made by Magistrate Dr Olusegun Ayilara on Thursday, who cited the severity of the alleged offence in his decision to deny bail. Ayilara dismissed the bail application submitted by the defendant’s counsel, Mr Oladipupo Olatunbosun, and adjourned the case until 23 December for further mention.
The incident reportedly took place on 19 October around 7:30 pm in the Old Garage area of Osogbo. According to police prosecutor ASP Akintunde Jacob, Olayinka was operating a Howo Sino truck, registered as SGB 961 XY, in a manner that posed a risk to public safety, ultimately resulting in Tajudeen’s death. The prosecutor stated that the charges brought against Olayinka contravene sections 18 and 27 of the Osun State Road Traffic Laws, as well as sections 146 and 548 of the Laws of Osun 2002.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges of manslaughter and dangerous driving when they were read out in court. His remand marks the start of legal proceedings that will continue in December.
