Nigeria Joins BRICS As Partner Nation Alongside 12 Other Countries.
Nigeria has officially joined BRICS as a partner nation, alongside 12 other countries, following the announcement made during the BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia, from 22nd to 24th October 2024.
The expansion of BRICS includes Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. This significant move aims to strengthen economic ties with emerging economies and foster international cooperation.
BRICS, originally composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and later South Africa in 2010, is a bloc focused on promoting trade, investment, and development among key emerging markets.
While countries like Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE gained full membership in January 2024, Nigeria’s status remains that of a partner nation. This follows a marked increase in foreign capital inflows from BRICS nations into Nigeria, which surged by 189% in the first half of 2024, totalling $1.27 billion. This represents a substantial rise from the $438.72 million recorded during the same period in 2023.
Nigeria’s inclusion in BRICS is expected to boost its trade and investment prospects, further integrating the nation into the global economy as it collaborates with other emerging markets.
