At the 2024 Second Regular Session of the UN Women Executive Board, U.S. Ambassador to ECOSOC, Ambassador Carty, reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to advancing gender equality globally.
Addressing the ongoing challenges to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 5 (Gender Equality), she commended the leadership of UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous and the organization’s efforts to promote the rights of women and girls.
Ambassador Carty highlighted the importance of 2025, a pivotal year for gender equality, with key events such as the 30th Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and an in-depth review of SDG 5 by the High-Level Political Forum on SDGs. She urged for deliberate planning to make these moments impactful for advancing gender equality.
In her remarks, Ambassador Carty welcomed UN Women’s Beijing+30 plans and encouraged collaboration among Member States.
She also praised the Secretary-General’s Gender Equality Acceleration Plan and UN Women’s support for the UN LGBTIQ+ Strategy, acknowledging ongoing work in this area.
Additionally, the U.S. expressed support for two Joint Inspection Unit reports presented at the session, highlighting their importance in strengthening governance and oversight.
Ambassador Carty requested more details on UN Women’s optimization plans, particularly the shift of staff from New York headquarters to international posts.
In conclusion, she commended UN Women’s transparency in financing its Strategic Plan and affirmed that the U.S. would submit further inquiries on this critical topic.
