Darwin Nunez Receives Five-Match Ban Following Altercation with Fans.
Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has been handed a five-game international suspension following an altercation with spectators after Uruguay’s Copa America semi-final defeat to Colombia in July. The 25-year-old was seen physically engaging with Colombian fans in the stands at the Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina after Uruguay lost 1-0.
The incident, which occurred in a section of the stadium where many of the Uruguay players’ family members were seated, has also resulted in a £15,145 ($20,000) fine for Nunez. South American football’s governing body, CONMEBOL, announced the disciplinary measures on Wednesday, with Nunez among five players who have been banned, and 11 others fined for their involvement in the post-match altercation.
Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur received a four-game ban, while Napoli’s Mathias Olivera, Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo, and Atletico Madrid’s Jose Maria Gimenez were all handed three-game suspensions.
The confrontation, which escalated following the final whistle, has been condemned by CONMEBOL, who described the scenes as “unacceptable.” The organization promptly launched an investigation into the matter, highlighting the seriousness of the incident.
Nunez’s suspension is a significant blow for Uruguay, as they prepare for future international fixtures without their key forward. The incident underscores the tensions that can arise in high-stakes football matches, especially when the emotional involvement of players and their families comes into play.
