Calabar to Host 2024 Nigeria Women Football League Championship.
The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) announced on Tuesday that Cross River State will host the 2023/2024 NWFL Championship. The second division of the league will take place from August 31 to September 8, 2024, in Calabar, Cross River State.
This championship follows the successful 2024 NWFL season calendar, including the Premiership Super Six finals hosted by Bayelsa State in June, where Edo Queens claimed their first title.
In a statement, NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi confirmed that the draws and pre-match meetings will occur on Thursday, August 29, after the clubs’ arrival in Cross River State.
The participating clubs will be divided into four groups—A, B, C, and D. Matchday One on Saturday, August 31, and Matchday Two on Sunday, September 1, will each feature eight matches at two venues. Monday, September 2, will be a rest day. Matchday Three on Tuesday, September 3, and Matchday Four on Wednesday, September 4, will each include eight matches. Thursday, September 5, will be the second rest day, followed by Matchday Five on Friday, September 6. The final Matchday Six on Sunday, September 8, will see four matches played simultaneously at two venues to determine promotion and relegation.
Shabi added that over 17 registered clubs will compete in Cross River State for this year’s championship. The top two teams will be promoted to the NWFL Premiership, while two teams will be relegated to the third division of the women’s league in Nigeria.
