North Korea Warns Of ‘Nuclear World War’

In a provocative statement from North Korea, the country’s state media has warned of an impending “nuclear world war” due to the actions of the United States and its allies.

The declaration, released by the Workers’ Party of Korea’s official newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, marks a heightened rhetoric as the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice approaches on July 27.

The article credits North Korean founder Kim Il Sung with preventing a global disaster by winning against the “self-proclaimed ‘strongest’ U.S. imperialists and their followers.” It accuses the U.S. and South Korea of initiating continuous and increasingly aggressive military exercises since the armistice, now allegedly crossing into the realm of provoking a nuclear war.

The statement comes as North Korea, led by Kim Jong Un, reaffirms the crucial role of its nuclear weapons program for national security. Last year, Pyongyang incorporated its nuclear arsenal into its constitution, underscoring its importance in deterring perceived threats from the U.S. and South Korea. Recent reports from the Seoul-based Daily NK suggest that North Korea has been holding mandatory lectures to emphasize the centrality of this nuclear strategy in countering a “war of aggression.”

Despite the Korean Armistice Agreement halting open conflict, North and South Korea remain technically at war, with current inter-Korean relations at their lowest in decades. North Korea’s recent constitutional amendment has designated South Korea as its “primary foe and invariable principal enemy,” a sentiment reinforced by a series of ballistic missile tests this year, contravening United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Tensions have escalated further as both Koreas suspended a 2018 military agreement aimed at easing border tensions, returning to Cold War-era tactics such as live-fire exercises, balloon exchanges, and loudspeaker broadcasts. Amid these developments, a significant portion of South Koreans now support pursuing their own nuclear weapons program, although the government has clarified no such actions are currently underway.

The heightened threat from Pyongyang has also driven South Korea to strengthen security cooperation with the United States and Japan, despite historical grievances and territorial disputes. This trilateral alliance is seen as a counterbalance to North Korea’s assertive military stance.
