Here Are Reasons Why Lagos State Govt Wants To Implement Bus Reforms On Lekki-Epe Corridor, No more Danfo Buses

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to implement significant changes to bus operations along the Lekki-Epe corridor, starting October 1, 2024.

This move is part of the state’s Bus Reform Initiative, aimed at improving public transportation and service delivery to Lagos residents.

Sola Giwa, Special Adviser on Transportation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, clarified in a statement on Sunday that contrary to some media reports, Danfo buses will not be completely banned in Lagos. Instead, the initiative will introduce mass transit buses specifically for the Lekki-Epe corridor.

Under the new plan, Danfo buses that meet Vehicle Inspection Service standards will continue to operate as mid-capacity buses. Similarly, Korope buses meeting the required standards will be integrated into First Mile Last Mile services, serving interior roads from Obalende/CMS to Ajah.

“The primary goal of the Bus Reform Initiative is to restructure commercial bus operations,” Giwa explained. “We are committed to providing a comfortable and efficient public transportation system for the residents of Lagos.”

The government cites the current chaotic state of bus operations on the corridor as the main reason for this regulation and integration of the informal transport sector into the State’s Bus Reform Initiative.

Key aspects of the reform include:
– Assignment of designated routes with strict compliance monitoring
– Introduction of an e-ticketing system to enhance passenger comfort
– Penalties for operators who contravene regulations, including fines and possible vehicle forfeiture

Giwa revealed that a stakeholders’ meeting was held on June 27th, involving heads of Transport Unions, key Transport Operators, and officials from the State’s Ministry of Transportation. The meeting addressed concerns and resulted in a signed communiqué.

As the October 1 implementation date approaches, Lagos residents and commuters along the Lekki-Epe corridor can expect significant changes to their daily transit experiences. The government assures that these reforms will lead to a more organised, efficient, and comfortable public transportation system.
