Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has issued a statement condemning the recent assassination attempt on former United States President Donald Trump.
The incident occurred during a political rally in Pennsylvania, USA, on Saturday, July 13, 2024.
According to reports, Trump narrowly escaped the attempt, stating, “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.” The Federal Bureau of Investigation has identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, who allegedly fired multiple gunshots from an elevated position outside the rally.
The attack resulted in one fatality and two injuries.
In a statement shared on his official X handle on Sunday, President Tinubu described the attack as “distasteful and beyond the pale of democratic norms.”
He emphasized that violence has no place in democracy and wished the former US President a quick recovery.
“I extend my sympathies to the former President and wish him relief. I also condole with the family of the deceased and those wounded and wish them a quick recovery,” Tinubu stated. He added, “Nigeria stands in solidarity with the United States of America at this time.”
The Secret Service reported that the shooter was “neutralised” by agents following the attack. The incident has sparked renewed discussions about political violence and security measures at high-profile events.
