A high-profile custody dispute has erupted between Afrobeat singer Davido (David Adeleke) and Sophia Momodu over their 9-year-old daughter.
Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation magazine and uncle to Sophia Momodu, has provided insight into the ongoing legal battle.
According to Momodu, Davido recently filed an affidavit seeking joint custody of the child.
This move reportedly surprised the Momodu family, as previous discussions between the parties had focused on Davido’s upcoming wedding and efforts to reconnect with his daughter.
The core issues appear to stem from financial disagreements. Momodu claims that problems arose concerning payment of school fees, accommodation, and childcare expenses.
He states that Davido’s father, Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, intervened to clear outstanding school fees and provide a car for the child’s transportation.
A key point of contention is the child’s living arrangements. Sophia Momodu reportedly declined an offer to live in a family-owned apartment, preferring instead that Davido contribute half of the rent for a separate residence.
Davido allegedly offered to pay 5 million naira annually, which fell short of Sophia’s expectations.
Momodu emphasized that Sophia has been willing to grant Davido access to their daughter, provided the child’s nanny is present. He also noted that the 9-year-old herself has requested this arrangement.
The case has been referred to alternative dispute resolution (ADR) by the court. Momodu has urged both parties to engage in this process constructively and to avoid making potentially harmful statements on social media.
As the custody battle unfolds, concerns have been raised about the impact on the child’s well-being. Both parties are being encouraged to prioritize their daughter’s interests and work towards an amicable resolution.
