Super Eagles Continue Winless Streak in FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
The Super Eagles’ struggles in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying series persisted Friday night as they were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
This match marked the first encounter between the two nations since Nigeria’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over South Africa in the AFCON 2024. From the outset, it was clear that the visitors were determined to make a statement, controlling the game’s tempo from the first whistle. Their efforts were rewarded in the 28th minute when Themba Zwane found the back of the net, giving Bafana Bafana a deserved lead.
Despite numerous attempts to break down the South African defense, the Super Eagles were unable to find an equalizer before the halftime whistle. The visitors held firm, maintaining their one-goal advantage as they headed into the break.
The second half, however, saw a swift response from Nigeria. Just a minute after the restart, Turkish-based midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who plays for Hatayspor, netted the equalizer, sparking hopes of a comeback among the home fans.
Yet, despite the early second-half breakthrough, Nigeria failed to capitalize on their momentum. Coach Finidi George’s side struggled to create clear-cut chances and ultimately settled for a draw, unable to secure the vital three points.
The result leaves Nigeria in a precarious position in Group C. The Super Eagles, still searching for their first win in the qualifiers, sit in 5th place with just a single point, trailing 4th placed South Africa by one point and group leaders Lesotho by two points.
Looking ahead, the Super Eagles face a crucial match against 3rd placed Benin Republic in Abidjan on Monday, June 10. Meanwhile, South Africa will take on Zimbabwe in their next fixture.
As Nigeria aims to turn their fortunes around and reignite their World Cup qualifying campaign, fans will be hoping for a much-improved performance and a decisive victory in their upcoming match.
