Raphael Varane Set to Depart Manchester United at the End of the Season
Manchester United’s defender Raphael Varane is poised to bid farewell to the club as his contract comes to an end this season.
The 31-year-old, who joined United from Real Madrid in July 2021 for an initial fee of around £34 million, has played a significant role in the team’s defensive setup, making 93 appearances during his tenure.
Varane’s contributions were instrumental in United’s Carabao Cup triumph in 2023 under manager Erik ten Hag, where they emerged victorious against Newcastle United in the final.
In a statement released by United, the club expressed gratitude to Varane for his service and wished him well for his future endeavors.
Prior to his stint at United, Varane enjoyed a successful career at Real Madrid, where he clinched three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies. His achievements also extended to the international stage, as he won the World Cup with France in 2018 before retiring from international football in February 2023.
However, Varane’s recent spell at United has been marred by injury, with his last appearance dating back to a 4-3 defeat against Chelsea on 4th April. It remains uncertain if he will recover in time for United’s final three games of the season, including a clash against Newcastle United and a league finale against Brighton.
Looking ahead, Varane expressed optimism for the future, particularly highlighting the positive direction under the club’s new owners and their strategic plans.
As Varane prepares to bid farewell to Old Trafford, his departure marks the end of a chapter filled with memorable performances and contributions to Manchester United’s defensive resilience.
