Como Ends 21-Year Long Wait to Return to Serie A
In a thrilling finale to the 2023-24 Serie B season, Como Football Club ended a 21-year hiatus from Serie A with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Cosenza. This result, coupled with Venezia’s defeat by Spezia, secured Como the second automatic promotion spot.
Gennaro Tutino’s 30th-minute goal initially put Como ahead, showcasing the team’s determination and skill. However, Simone Verdi’s penalty equalizer for Cosenza tested Como’s resolve. Ultimately, the draw was enough to propel Como into Serie A, marking a significant milestone for the Lombardy-based club.
Osian Roberts, Como’s caretaker manager, etched his name in history as the first Welshman to secure promotion to Italy’s top-flight league. Under Roberts’ guidance, Como has experienced a remarkable journey, rising from the depths of Serie D to now compete among Italy’s elite clubs.
Como’s recent successes stand in stark contrast to their tumultuous past. Relegated from Serie A in 2003, the club faced financial hardships and relegations, including spells in Serie D and Serie C. However, with resilience and strategic management, Como began a remarkable ascent.
The club’s fortunes turned with the acquisition by UK-based entertainment company SENT Entertainment in 2019. Since then, Como has achieved promotion twice in the last six seasons, culminating in their return to Serie A.
Key figures like Dennis Wise, former Premier League midfielder and now sporting director at Como, have played pivotal roles in the club’s resurgence. Wise’s guidance, alongside marquee signings like Cesc Fabregas and Thierry Henry, has brought experience and leadership to Como’s squad.
Fabregas, a World Cup winner and seasoned midfielder, joined Como’s ranks in 2022, adding depth and expertise to the team. Henry, also a part-owner of the club, contributed his legendary status and football knowledge to Como’s coaching staff.
Despite Fabregas briefly taking the reins as interim boss, Roberts’ tenure as caretaker manager saw Como achieve promotion, highlighting the collective effort and determination within the club.
Como’s return to Serie A after more than two decades signifies a new chapter filled with anticipation and excitement. As they prepare to compete against Italy’s top clubs once again, Como fans and football enthusiasts alike eagerly await the team’s performance in the upcoming Serie A season.
