Administrator Samantha Power of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) delivered an address at the Global Education Conference, emphasizing the urgent need to address the ongoing global education crisis.

The conference, held on April 16, 2024, provided a platform for international leaders to discuss strategies for improving educational outcomes worldwide.

Power began her remarks by expressing gratitude to the conference organizers and participants, acknowledging the remarkable leadership of individuals such as LeAnna Marr and Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, the Minister of Education from Malawi. She also took a moment to honor the memory of Sarah Crites, a dedicated public servant who contributed significantly to improving education in various countries.

Reflecting on Marr’s exemplary service of 25 years at USAID, Power highlighted Marr’s dedication to education and recounted an anecdote showcasing Marr’s commitment to nurturing her team members. Power praised Marr for her instrumental role in advancing education initiatives and acknowledged the invaluable lessons learned from Marr’s leadership.

Power then delved into the challenges facing global education, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate-driven disasters, and conflict on learning outcomes. Despite these challenges, Power commended the resilience of educators and learners worldwide, highlighting innovative approaches to education delivery during times of crisis.

Over the past five years, USAID’s international education programs have trained millions of teachers and supplied essential learning materials to millions of students. Power stated the importance of resilience, health, and safety in creating conducive learning environments, emphasizing initiatives to address issues such as lead poisoning in schools.

Additionally, Power stressed the significance of collaboration in tackling the complex challenges of global education. She outlined USAID’s commitment to partnering with local governments, multilateral organizations, and other stakeholders to leverage resources and expertise effectively.

Power concluded her address by acknowledging the dedication of educators and policymakers around the world, particularly in conflict-affected regions like Ukraine. She emphasized the transformative power of education in shaping future generations and expressed gratitude to all those working tirelessly to ensure access to quality education for all.
