In response to recent attempts by agitators for secession to infiltrate government facilities, governors across Southwest Nigeria have intensified security measures to safeguard state infrastructure and maintain order.
The decision comes on the heels of a foiled incursion by masked individuals into the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, where they sought to raise a secessionist flag over the weekend.
Notably, Yoruba Nation advocate Sunday Adeyemo (popularly known as Igboho) has distanced himself from these activities, emphasising his commitment to non-violence and disavowing any association with the perpetrators.
In solidarity, Afenifere, led by Pa Rueben Fasoranti, has decried the invasion and called for stern penalties against those responsible. Governors have echoed this sentiment, warning that severe repercussions await individuals inciting violence under the guise of secessionist movements.
Authorities in Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ogun States have bolstered their security presence at government installations, including state secretariats and legislative assemblies, to preempt any potential disturbances. Special Advisers on Security Matters have been tasked with coordinating joint security efforts to uphold public safety.
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has emphasised the importance of national unity and urged agitators to channel their efforts towards constructive dialogue within the framework of constitutional reforms.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State government has assured citizens of its proactive stance in maintaining public order, emphasising the readiness of security agencies to quell any threats to peace.
In the midst of these developments, Sunday Adeyemo reiterated his stance against violence and urged authorities to investigate and prosecute those behind the recent incursions, affirming his commitment to peaceful advocacy for the Yoruba people’s aspirations.
Afenifere has reiterated the indissoluble unity of Yoruba within the Federal Republic of Nigeria, emphasising the need for constructive engagement to address governance challenges rather than pursuing separatist ambitions.
As tensions simmer, Southwest governors remain steadfast in their resolve to uphold law and order, emphasising the imperative of collective efforts to preserve the integrity and stability of the nation.
