In a move emphasising transparency and commitment to robust trade agreements, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has disclosed summaries of proposed texts from the U.S. side in ongoing negotiations with Kenya.
The released summaries cover crucial areas, including good regulatory practices, workers’ rights and protections, and a second tranche of agriculture-related matters.
This disclosure aligns with the Biden-Harris Administration’s pledge to transparency in trade negotiations. The negotiations, which commenced on April 2 and will continue until April 12 in Washington, D.C., are pivotal in shaping the U.S.-Kenya Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership.
The overarching objective of this partnership is to bolster investment, foster sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and ensure benefits for workers, consumers, and businesses, including micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.
Moreover, it aims to support regional economic integration in Africa.
The newly released summaries provide insights into the U.S. proposals for various chapters, including a second tranche on agriculture, good regulatory practices, and workers’ rights and protections.
Notably, this follows previous disclosures by USTR on texts regarding agriculture, anticorruption, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, as well as services domestic regulation.
Both the United States and Kenya are united in their pursuit of high-standard commitments across multiple domains within this partnership, aiming for economically significant outcomes.
This endeavour echoes the joint statement released on July 14, 2022, underscoring shared objectives and aspirations between the two nations.
