Rivers United’s journey in the CAF Confederation Cup came to an end in the Quarterfinals as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to defending champions USM Alger in Algeria on Sunday night.
The Algerians, led by Malian striker Abdullah Kanou, secured a crucial victory with a goal in each half, overturning their 1-0 loss in the first leg in Nigeria and winning the tie 2-1 on aggregate to progress to the semi-finals.
USM Alger displayed a strong start, pressing for an early lead, and their efforts paid off in the 37th minute when Kanou found the net from close range.
The second half saw increased attacking intensity from USM Alger, although the game mostly centered around midfield battles.
Rivers United had a chance to level the score, but Andy Okpe’s header hit the crossbar in the 72nd minute, denying them a goal.
Kanou sealed the victory for USM Alger with another goal in the 74th minute, securing their spot in the semi-finals, where they will face Moroccan club Berkane.
