Canada-Based Elite Rugby Player Fedelia Angeles Supports Nigeria Women’s Rugby Development

Fedelia Angeles, a rugby player based in Canada, has expressed her support for the development of Nigeria Women’s Rugby into a competitive force following their participation in the recent African Games in Accra, Ghana.

Angeles, who captained the Lady Stallions of Nigeria 7s team in the 13th All African Games, praised the team’s spirit despite their losses against Ghana, Uganda, and Madagascar.

Reflecting on the team’s performance in an interview with SpeedySportsNG, she mentioned, “We are a very new team, playing together for the first time. Nigeria women’s rugby hasn’t had a match in 15 years, so we are in a learning phase, getting familiar with the game and growing as a team.”

“We faced tough opponents but couldn’t secure a win. Nonetheless, we are proud of our progress from the first game to the last. We showed improvement and gave a close fight to Madagascar, a strong rugby nation. There’s a lot to build on for Nigeria’s rugby in the coming years,” Angeles added.

She emphasized the need for more international exposure and playing experience for Nigerian players, stating, “If we can get our players to compete overseas and play more international matches, we will undoubtedly grow. Right now, we need opportunities.”

Angeles highlighted her experience and contributions to the team, focusing on technical skills and the importance of learning rugby laws. She also mentioned the potential of young Nigerian players and the bright future of Nigerian rugby with proper support and guidance.

Regarding her experience representing Nigeria and leading the team in their first major competition, Angeles expressed, “It’s a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to play for the nation and with this team. It’s been five years in the making, and finally, we’ve achieved it. Wearing this crest means a lot.”

In Rugby Union, Angeles continues to excel, recently winning the title of 2024 Female Club Player of the Year for Rugby Ontario, representing Scarborough RFC.
