Former South Africa junior international Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life in a carjacking incident in Johannesburg, as disclosed by the police on Thursday.
The 24-year-old was fatally shot in the chest during an incident at a gas station on Wednesday night. Reports indicate that the perpetrators fled the scene with Fleurs’ vehicle after the attack.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, a police spokesperson, the tragic event unfolded while Fleurs was waiting to be served at the gas station. He was confronted by two armed individuals, leading to the fatal shooting.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Fleurs had a notable football career, having represented South Africa at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021, where he played every minute.
Additionally, he earned a call-up to the senior national team for World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia in the same year, although he did not make an appearance during those matches and remained uncapped at the senior level.
