The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has greenlit an increase in electricity tariffs specifically aimed at customers falling under the Band A classification.
The Vice Chairman of NERC, Musliu Oseni, disclosed that this adjustment will see Band A customers paying N225 per kilowatt hour (KW/h), a significant jump from the current rate of N66.
Band A customers are identified as those benefiting from a daily supply of electricity ranging from 20 to 24 hours. This categorization is part of NERC’s segmentation strategy, with Band B, C, D, and E subscribers enjoying decreasing hours of supply respectively.
Oseni clarified that the tariff review exclusively impacts Band A subscribers, representing approximately 15% of the nation’s 12 million electricity customers, totaling about 1.8 million individuals.
It’s important to note that this adjustment will not affect customers in other bands, as emphasized by NERC.
Earlier reports from Bloomberg hinted at a potential increase in electricity prices to N200 ($0.15) per KW/h for urban consumers, up from the previous N68 rate. Sources within the presidency suggested that this move is intended to stimulate new investments and reduce the approximately $2.3 billion expenditure currently incurred in tariff capping measures.
In light of these developments, It was gathred that the significance of this tariff adjustment, particularly for Lagos State subscribers under the Band A tariff plan, who benefit from the uninterrupted 20 to 24-hour electricity supply provided by the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, as outlined in a document prepared by NERC.
