Amidst ongoing economic challenges plaguing the nation, residents of Ondo State took desperate measures as a truck carrying essential food items fell prey to looters.
The incident unfolded at the bustling cultural center junction on the Ondo Express Road when the truck experienced a mechanical breakdown.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaotic scene as the driver was overpowered, leading to the forcible entry into the vehicle. Despite remnants of food items scattered along the roadside upon our reporter’s arrival, the truck had been emptied of its cargo.
Reports indicate that the looted goods primarily comprised grains, including rice and garri, packaged in cartons bearing the branding of President Bola Tinubu.
Surprisingly, individuals from various walks of life, including petty traders, artisans, drivers, and commercial motorcyclists, participated in the looting.
Expressing dismay over the incident, social commentator Ibidapo Adelusi condemned the actions of the residents, urging law enforcement to apprehend the culprits. Adelusi emphasized that while acknowledging the prevalent hunger and hardship, resorting to theft was unacceptable.
In response to inquiries, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, revealed that no formal complaints had been registered regarding the incident.
This incident in Ondo State closely follows a similar occurrence in Kebbi State, underscoring the heightened desperation among citizens amidst the prevailing economic difficulties.
