Bayobab Group, a subsidiary of MTN Group, has announced the successful restoration of its operations after experiencing subsea cable disruptions last Thursday.
Despite the challenges posed by the disruptions, the telecom operator swiftly recovered over 3 Terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity across its footprint.
In a statement released on Tuesday, MTN disclosed that through efficient rerouting of traffic and the activation of new cables, Bayobab Group bolstered its network resilience, ensuring continuity of services for its customers.
The statement highlighted the company’s commitment to prioritizing network reliability and its dedication to connecting Africa, marking the final stretch toward connecting all valued customers.
Bayobab’s ecosystem facilitates secure and scalable global traffic within Africa and the rest of the world, serving 19 MTN markets, third-party Mobile Network Operators, Technology corporations, and other Telecoms Service Providers.
Last Thursday’s subsea cable cuts affected broadband Internet connectivity to Nigeria and countries in the West African sub-region, leading to scaled-down operations for banks, financial institutions, telecom companies, and allied firms.
The affected cable companies include the West African Cable System and African Coast to Europe, among others.
Over the weekend, telcos, banks, and financial institutions rerouted their traffic to alternative service providers to mitigate the disruption’s impact.
Recall On Monday, the Nigerian Communications Commission announced that services had been restored to approximately 90 per cent of their peak utilization capacities.
Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, Gbenga Adebayo, expressed optimism that services would be fully restored soon, citing progress made in rerouting traffic through alternate routes.
Adebayo explained that while the incident affected specific routes, operators were able to improvise alternate routes to maintain service continuity, a common practice in network planning.
