The revered Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, has passed away at the age of 81. The demise of the monarch was confirmed in an official statement released by the Chief Press Secretary, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, on Thursday.

Oba Balogun breathed his last on Thursday evening at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

The late Olubadan, who spent two years on the throne of his forefathers, was presented with the Staff of Office by the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, on March 11, 2022. Governor Makinde expressed profound grief over the passing of the monarch, describing him as a towering figure akin to an Iroko tree.

“With total submission to the will of God, I announce the passing unto glory of our father, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland. A mighty Iroko has fallen; Oba Balogun has joined the ancestors,” Governor Makinde lamented.

The governor extended heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late monarch, the Olubadan-in-Council, the state Traditional Council, and the people of Ibadanland. He prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed monarch.

“The passing of Oba Dr. Balogun marks the end of an era for Ibadanland, leaving behind a profound void in its rich history and heritage,” Governor Makinde remarked.

Oba Lekan Balogun, born on October 18, 1942, ascended the throne two years ago following the demise of the late Oba Saliu Adetunji. Just days before his passing, the late monarch expressed gratitude for the grace and privilege to have served for two years. He urged prayers for the country and encouraged expressions of love amongst adherents as Ramadan commenced.

The passing of Oba Lekan Balogun, a figure deeply rooted in the history and culture of Ibadanland, leaves a significant void in the hearts of many. His legacy and contributions will be remembered with reverence and respect by generations to come.
