Rigobert Song has stepped down from his position as the head coach of the Cameroon national team, announced Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), on Wednesday.
Cameroon’s journey in the Africa Cup of Nations ended in the round of 16 in January, with eventual runners-up Nigeria eliminating them from the tournament.
“We have not met our objectives, and after careful consideration, our executive committee and I have decided not to extend the contract with Song,” stated Eto’o in an interview with France 24.
Song, who once played alongside Eto’o for the national team, took on the role of Cameroon’s head coach in February 2022.
Under his leadership, the Indomitable Lions secured a thrilling playoff victory against Algeria in extra time, earning qualification for the Qatar World Cup. However, despite a surprise win over Brazil in their final group stage match, the five-time African champions failed to progress beyond the group stage.
