United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on countries worldwide to expedite the process of phasing out fossil fuels.
The call to action was made during his address at the inaugural International Day of Clean Energy celebration over the weekend.
Guterres emphasized the inevitability and necessity of transitioning away from fossil fuels, labeling clean energy as a gift that the entire world must embrace.
“It is my firm belief that fossil fuel phase-out is not only necessary but also inevitable. But we need governments to act, to accelerate the transition, with the biggest emitters leading the way,” he stated.
This plea comes on the heels of a historic moment at the COP28 Climate Conference held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where global leaders officially endorsed the world’s commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels.
The UN Secretary-General’s call for swift action aligns with the collective acknowledgment of the environmental challenges posed by continued reliance on fossil fuels.
