The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ola Olukoyede, expressed deep concern over the increasing prevalence of gratification and bribery among the agency’s investigators.

Olukoyede acknowledged the negative public perception surrounding EFCC investigators and emphasized the embarrassment it brings to the anti-graft agency.

He issued a strong warning that such conduct would no longer be tolerated during his tenure, promising decisive actions against investigators involved in bribery.

The chairman revealed plans to root out corrupt practices within the commission.

“At this point, I need to strongly reiterate the issue of discipline, integrity, and sense of responsibility in the way we do our work.

The craze and quest for gratification, bribes, and other compromises by some of our investigators are becoming too embarrassing and this must not continue,” stated Olukoyede.

He further disclosed that the Department of Internal Affairs has been directed to intensify its efforts in monitoring all staff engagements to maintain the integrity of the commission.

While addressing concerns about staff welfare, Olukoyede assured that steps were being taken to improve conditions for EFCC personnel. Though specifics were not provided, he hinted at positive changes in the coming year.

Reflecting on the challenges faced in the past year, Olukoyede highlighted the commission’s efforts to stabilize the system and implement new initiatives following his appointment as chairman in the last quarters of 2023.

The chairman outlined a three-pronged agenda focusing on the EFCC’s mandate, responsible governance, and building Nigeria’s international image.

He emphasized the importance of preventive measures against corruption, adherence to the rule of law, and engaging the public in the fight against financial crimes.

Olukoyede urged EFCC staff to familiarize themselves with the commission’s reviewed guidelines for arrests and bail, citing the need to conform with international best practices in law enforcement.

In concluding his address, he reminded staff members of their privileged position at the EFCC, emphasizing the Latin phrase “noblesse oblige,” which translates to nobility demands responsibility.

Olukoyede urged every staff member to uphold their duty and obligation in dignifying the privilege of being part of the EFCC.
