In observance of International Migrants Day, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken issued a press statement underscoring the importance of recognizing and supporting the hundreds of millions of migrants living outside their home countries.
The United States, committed to leading global efforts, emphasizes the need for countries to expand lawful pathways, protect vulnerable migrants, promote inclusion, and implement policies fostering safe, orderly, and humane migration.
Highlighting the significant role played by the United States, Secretary Blinken noted the country’s leadership in the largest expansion of lawful migration pathways in decades.
This initiative aims to assist vulnerable migrants, refugees, and displaced persons, with particular commendation for other nations undertaking similar efforts while respecting national sovereignty and security. The Safe Mobility initiative, launched in June 2023, has facilitated the rapid processing and support for tens of thousands of individuals.
The United States has been at the forefront of refugee resettlement, welcoming more than 3.5 million refugees into communities across the nation since 1975. The press statement emphasized the substantial social and economic contributions immigrants make, driving the country’s competitiveness and innovation on the global stage.
Acknowledging the worldwide scope of migration challenges, the United States asserted its position as the largest single provider of humanitarian assistance. In the fiscal year 2023, the U.S. contributed nearly $15 billion in life-saving humanitarian aid, reaching refugees, conflict victims, internally displaced persons, stateless individuals, and vulnerable migrants. Collaborating with partners, the United States is actively working towards a future where migration becomes a safe, regular, voluntary, and informed choice for individuals worldwide.
