In a virtual meeting held on December 6, 2023, the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) reaffirmed their commitment to addressing global challenges and shaping a better future.

The G7, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, gathered virtually to discuss critical issues and express solidarity in pursuing international peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.

The meeting, held in the wake of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, a city symbolic of peace due to its history of atomic bombings, emphasized the group’s dedication to upholding the rule of law, global security, and human dignity worldwide. The leaders expressed gratitude to the Japanese Presidency for their leadership throughout the year.

Key Highlights:

1. Support for Ukraine: The G7 nations reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine, condemning Russia’s illegal aggression. They pledged nearly $10 million to aid Ukraine in its fight for independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Measures include restricting exports crucial to Russia’s military, curbing its use of the international financial system, and limiting Russia’s energy revenue.

2. Digital Technology Commitments: The leaders focused on advancing discussions on inclusive artificial intelligence (AI) governance, endorsing the Hiroshima AI Process Comprehensive Policy Framework. This framework includes guiding principles and a code of conduct for advanced AI systems’ impact on societies and economies. The G7 committed to supporting the Hiroshima Process International Guiding Principles and Code of Conduct.

3. Climate Change and Environment: G7 nations reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement, aiming for a 1.5°C global temperature rise limit. They pledged support for renewable energy, increased energy efficiency, and a net-zero emissions target by 2050. The G7 committed to phasing out unabated coal power, tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050, and mobilizing $100 billion annually for climate finance by 2025.

4. Economic Resilience and Security: The leaders addressed economic coercion, emphasizing strategic coordination against the weaponization of economic vulnerabilities. They pledged to prevent cutting-edge technologies from fueling military threats, promoting risk-based policies for research security, and supporting resilient supply chains.

5. Trade and Global Health: The G7 called for WTO reform, renewed commitment to global food security, and strengthened the global health architecture. They emphasized achieving universal health coverage, addressing future health emergencies, and promoting comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights.

The G7 leaders concluded the virtual summit by looking ahead to the 2024 Italian G7 Presidency, expressing their commitment to addressing crises, promoting partnerships with developing countries, and focusing on key issues such as economic security, sustainable development, and gender equality.
