The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given the nod for a contract worth N3.23 billion for the supply and installation of customised explosive and narcotic detection screening systems.
The advanced screening systems will be deployed at five international airports in Nigeria, including Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, Mallam Aminu Kano Airport in Kano, Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, and Port Harcourt Airport in Rivers State.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made the announcement after the weekly council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
The decision to invest in these screening systems was driven by the challenges and delays experienced at airport terminals, with the aim of providing relief to Nigerian passengers.
Keyamo emphasized the need for advanced equipment to enhance security measures at the airports and alleviate the inconvenience caused by physical bag searches.
The new screening systems, equipped with a drive view mechanism, are expected to streamline the security process and bring an end to the manual and time-consuming searches conducted by various agencies.
In a related development, the FEC also approved a bilateral air service agreement with the Republic of Guyana, aiming to facilitate direct flights between the two countries. This agreement, initiated in 2014,
