During the maiden convocation ceremony at the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU) in Okerenkoko, Delta State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed the Amanyanabo of Twon Brass Kingdom, King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff, Seriya II, as the Chancellor of the institution.
The appointment, announced on Saturday, was made on behalf of President Tinubu by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo.
As part of the convocation festivities, the university conferred honorary degrees on key individuals who have played pivotal roles in its growth. High Chief Oweizide Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, was honored with a Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Honoris Causa), while King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff received a Doctor of Letters for their notable contributions to the university’s development.
Upon his installation as Chancellor, King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff expressed commitment to steering NMU towards becoming a globally renowned institution. In an address during the convocation, President Tinubu conveyed his awareness of the university’s vision to be the preferred maritime institution for those aspiring to build careers in the industry. He expressed confidence that NMU would excel in enhancing Nigeria’s capacity in maritime technology and business, aligning with global best practices to position the country among the world’s leading maritime economies.
President Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced by the university in its early phases but assured continued government support to address these obstacles. He pledged to ensure that the institution’s needs are met to foster its growth and development.
