Police in Rivers State have launched an investigation into the death of a 200-level female accounting student at the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort).
The student, identified only as Adaeze, was found dead in her off-campus apartment in Aluu, according to a statement by UniPort’s Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Chima Wokocha, on Monday.
Wokocha said Adaeze’s neighbors discovered her body and transported it to the university’s health facility. Police and university officials visited the scene.
A bottle of poisonous substance was reportedly found near Adaeze’s body, leading to suspicions of suicide. Her parents had been notified and were making arrangements to collect her remains.
Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding Adaeze’s death. This comes just weeks after a UniPort student was allegedly murdered by her ex-boyfriend in a separate incident.
The recent death has shocked the university community, already reeling from the prior femicide case. Police are working swiftly to uncover the facts behind this latest tragedy.
Counseling services are being offered to students as the university mourns the loss of another young life. UniPort administration reiterated its commitment to student welfare and safety.
