The 30000 capacity, Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo will host Rivers United FC, 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup group stage matches.
This is according to the list of approved stadiums released by CAF on Tuesday, October 10, ahead of the group stage matches of this seasons, CAF Confederation Cup.
As reflected on the CAF list, Nigeria’s only representative in the competition, Rivers United will play their home games at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo and not the Adokiye Amasiamaka Stadium in Port-Harcourt.
The Pride of Rivers progressed to the group stage of the competition after a 2-0 aggregate victory over Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso in the second qualifying round.
Recall that Rivers United FC hosted the return leg vs Etoile Filante at their regular home ground , the Adokiye Amasiamaka Stadium, but the venue falls short of CAF standard for the group stage hence the adoption of the neighboring Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Coach Stanley Eguma tutored Rivers United FC are drawn in Group C alongside Club Africain (Tunisia), Dream FC ( Ghana), and APC Lobito (Angola).
The switch to Uyo will not be an entirely strange decision for Rivers United FC, as same venue hosted with success, their 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup group stage matches.
The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo is home ground of Nigeria Premier Football League club, Akwa United FC and a CAF listed venue for Nigeria’s National team matches.
