Police Apprehend Suspected Transformer Vandals In Akwa Ibom.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully arrested two individuals suspected of vandalising electricity transformers in Ikot Idim, Ika Local Government Area. The operation, conducted in collaboration with the military and local vigilantes, marks a significant step in curbing the rising tide of vandalism targeting public infrastructure in the region.

According to a statement from the police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, the arrests were made in the early hours of Sunday, 24 August 2025, following credible intelligence about a criminal gang planning to infiltrate the state from neighbouring Imo State. The suspects, identified as Collins Ekwelu Ekene, 37, from Orlu, Imo State, and Elijah Edet John, 36, from Obot Idem village, Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, but residing in Rivers State, were caught attempting to dismantle a transformer. Three other gang members fled the scene, escaping into nearby bushes.

The joint security team recovered several items from the suspects, including two gas cylinders, a towing chain, two iron cutters, an oxygen nozzle, two long iron pipes, and two mobile phones. DSP John confirmed that the suspects have confessed to the crime, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accomplices. The police have reiterated their commitment to protecting public assets and ensuring the safety of residents.

This latest operation follows a series of arrests in Akwa Ibom targeting vandals and other criminals. Earlier this month, the police apprehended suspected cultists and recovered stolen items, including mobile phones and a locally made firearm. The state has seen a surge in vandalism, particularly of electricity infrastructure, prompting Governor Umo Eno to express concern over the damage to public facilities.

The swift response from the security forces has been welcomed by local communities, who have faced frequent power outages due to transformer vandalism. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around public installations to the nearest police station, reinforcing their resolve to clamp down on such crimes.

As investigations continue, the arrested suspects are expected to face prosecution, sending a clear message that vandalism of critical infrastructure will not be tolerated. The police have pledged to sustain their efforts to safeguard lives and property across the state, fostering a safer environment for all.
