Liverpool Snatch Dramatic 3-2 Victory Over Newcastle In Premier League Thriller.

In a pulsating Premier League encounter at St James’ Park on Monday, 25 August 2025, Liverpool secured a thrilling 3-2 win against Newcastle United, with 16-year-old debutant Rio Ngumoha scoring a sensational last-gasp winner. The match, part of the second round of the 2025/26 Premier League season, showcased high drama, including a red card and a late fightback from a ten-man Newcastle side.

The game began with Liverpool asserting early dominance. In the 36th minute, Ryan Gravenberch broke the deadlock with a stunning long-range strike into the bottom corner, giving the Reds a deserved lead. The visitors doubled their advantage just after the break, with Hugo Ekitike delivering a sweeping finish in the 46th minute to make it 2-0. Newcastle’s hopes took a blow in first-half stoppage time when Anthony Gordon received a red card following a VAR review, leaving the Magpies with ten players.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Newcastle mounted a spirited comeback. Bruno Guimarães pulled one back in the 57th minute, igniting the home crowd’s hopes. With the clock ticking into the 87th minute, substitute William Osula levelled the score at 2-2, capitalising on a defensive lapse to stun Liverpool. However, in the 100th minute of added time, young Ngumoha, introduced as a late substitute, produced a moment of magic, weaving through the Newcastle defence to score a breathtaking winner, securing a 3-2 victory for Liverpool.

Manager Arne Slot praised his team’s mental resilience, noting the difficulty of playing at St James’ Park. “We didn’t play well enough with the ball, but the way we defended set pieces after the 2-2 and the quality of that final attack was outstanding,” Slot said, singling out Ngumoha’s “great goal” as a highlight. The result leaves Liverpool among the few teams with a 100% record after two matches, while Newcastle, despite a valiant effort, remain with one point from their opening fixtures.

The match underscored Liverpool’s attacking prowess, averaging 3.0 goals per game this season, though their defensive vulnerabilities were evident, as Newcastle’s persistence nearly earned them a draw. Newcastle’s recent form showed resilience, with five wins in their last six home games prior to this match, but Liverpool’s historical edge—now with 18 wins to Newcastle’s 5 in 50 head-to-head clashes—proved decisive.

Fans on X lauded Ngumoha’s impact, with posts celebrating the teenager’s composure under pressure. The victory strengthens Liverpool’s early-season momentum, while Newcastle will look to regroup as they face upcoming fixtures with renewed determination.
