Nnamdi Azikiwe University Imposes Indefinite Ban On Sign-Out Ceremonies.
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State, has announced an immediate and indefinite ban on the traditional “signing off” celebrations held by final-year students after their examinations. The decision, outlined in a statement by the university’s registrar, Dr Chinenye Okeke, on 20 August 2025, cites recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption as the primary reasons for the prohibition.

The popular ritual, where students mark the completion of their studies by signing customised shirts and engaging in festive gatherings, has increasingly led to disorderly conduct, according to university authorities. Dr Okeke highlighted concerns over unauthorised individuals infiltrating the campus during these events, posing significant security risks to students and staff. The statement noted that the celebrations have escalated into “unruly gatherings,” often resulting in property damage and threats to safety.
The university’s management has warned that any student found participating in or organising such activities will face severe disciplinary measures, including possible rustication. Additionally, outsiders attempting to join the banned celebrations risk arrest and prosecution for breaching the peace. “This decision responds to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption associated with these events,” the statement read, underscoring UNIZIK’s commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive academic environment.
Reports indicate that security operatives have already taken action to enforce the ban. On 21 August 2025, three final-year students—two female and one male—were apprehended by campus security for violating the new directive by engaging in sign-out activities. The university reiterated its stance that such actions undermine the institution’s efforts to prioritise safety and academic excellence.
The move has sparked mixed reactions among students. While some expressed disappointment over the loss of a cherished tradition, others supported the decision, acknowledging the need to curb disruptive behaviour. Posts on X reflect a range of sentiments, with some users describing the ban as “unfair” for preventing students from celebrating their academic milestones, while others endorsed the university’s focus on restoring order.
UNIZIK’s management has indicated openness to dialogue with student leaders to explore alternative, orderly ways to celebrate academic achievements. However, any such alternatives must align with the institution’s standards of safety and dignity. The university reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a secure environment, urging students to focus on their studies and report any security concerns to the authorities.
