U.S. Secretary Of State Blinken Applauds African Innovations In Food Security And Economic Growth

In a compelling event held at the AfricaRice Headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken commended the groundbreaking efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency and economic growth in Africa

Joined by representatives from the African Development Bank and AfricaRice, Secretary Blinken expressed optimism about Africa not only feeding itself but potentially becoming a global food provider.

Key Highlights from Secretary Blinken’s Remarks:

1. Investments in Sustainable Production: Acknowledging the pivotal role of the African Development Bank, Secretary Blinken highlighted their commendable investments in sustainable production, emphasizing smart and effective strategies.





2. Resilient Crop Production: AfricaRice’s longstanding commitment to maximizing crops, particularly those resilient to climate change, was applauded. The focus on nutrition and creating a comprehensive infrastructure for both production and distribution was emphasized.

3. U.S. Innovation for Food Security: Secretary Blinken emphasized the transformative potential of innovative solutions, citing the recent global crises, including climate change, COVID-19, and conflicts, as catalysts for substantial U.S. emergency assistance. The U.S. remains a significant contributor to the World Food Programme.

4. Vision for Adapted Soil and Crops (VACS): Introducing a new initiative called Vision for Adapted Soil and Crops (VACS), Secretary Blinken outlined a comprehensive approach. This initiative aims to adapt traditional crops in Africa for climate resilience, complemented by advanced soil technology for productive mapping.

5. Empowering Women in Agriculture: The importance of women’s roles in agriculture was underscored, acknowledging their significant contributions. Secretary Blinken highlighted the potential economic impact of gender equality in the workplace, emphasizing the empowerment of women.

6. Global Economic Impact:  Secretary Blinken drew attention to the far-reaching benefits of increased productivity, including economic growth, employment opportunities, and the positive impact on related businesses.

7. Partnership and Collaboration: Expressing gratitude for the partnership with the African Development Bank, Secretary Blinken emphasized the collaborative efforts to elevate Africa’s productive capacity, aligning with President Biden’s focus on sustainable African capacity.

The event showcased the collaborative efforts driving innovative solutions for food security, economic growth, and gender inclusivity in agriculture.

Secretary Blinken’s visit aimed to celebrate achievements, highlight ongoing initiatives, and reinforce the commitment to a self-sufficient and globally influential Africa.
