Tragic Assault On Celestial Church In Ogun State: Prophet Killed During Service

Tragic Assault On Celestial Church In Ogun State: Prophet Killed During Service.

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples of fear and mourning through the community, gunmen invaded the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Idiroko, within the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Sunday morning, resulting in the brutal killing of 54-year-old Prophet Yomi Adetula.

The attack occurred during an active church service, with reports indicating that the assailants arrived at the CCC Eagle Parish located along Baggage Road, Odo Eran, at approximately 10:30 AM. According to multiple eyewitness accounts and confirmed by the state police, the gunmen, numbering at least three, specifically targeted Prophet Adetula. They opened fire, riddling his body with bullets, and then used an axe to ensure his demise, leaving the congregation in a state of terror and confusion.

Prophet Adetula, who was also known to serve as a commander in the Ogun State So-Safe Security outfit, was described by those who knew him as a dedicated spiritual leader and a pillar of the community. His death has not only left a void in the church he led but also in the local security framework where he was an active participant.

The police, led by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, have confirmed the incident and stated that officers were dispatched to the scene immediately after the distress call. They found Adetula lifeless, his white celestial garment stained with blood, and his head brutally mangled with an axe. The assailants managed to flee the scene, heading towards the border area, which complicates the pursuit due to the proximity to the international boundary.

Investigations are currently underway, with the police promising a thorough inquiry to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act. “We are deploying all resources at our disposal to ensure that justice is served for Prophet Adetula and to prevent such an attack from happening again,” Odutola stated during a press briefing.

This incident has sparked a significant outcry on social media, with posts on X (formerly Twitter) reflecting the community’s shock and demand for increased security measures in religious settings. There is a trending call for the government to bolster the Amotekun Corps, Ogun State’s local security outfit, to better protect its citizens, especially in light of this tragedy.

The Celestial Church of Christ, known for its distinct white garments and spiritual practices, has a wide following in Nigeria. This attack has not only affected the Idiroko community but has also raised concerns among religious groups nationwide about the safety of places of worship.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Prophet Yomi Adetula, with many calling for swift justice and enhanced security measures to safeguard against future tragedies. The church has planned a memorial service for the late prophet, inviting all to join in remembrance and prayer for peace and protection.
