The Role Of Millennials In An Evolving Global Culture

Remember when culture was strongly characterized by family, language, clothes, physical and social relations?

Nowadays, this characterization may no longer hold effectively; as there is an entirely different form of social relations that is being spear-headed by Millennials, technology and social media.

Millennials refer to individuals born between the late 1980s and early 2000s; and they are drastically changing the way global culture evolves. This is because they represent a large group of people positioned in future key roles as they have reached their prime and are the newest generation of politicians, parents, teachers, leaders and executives.

The role of technology and the internet in this generation cannot be overstated. In fact, the internet has increasingly become the platform for social and cultural growth for Millennials.

For instance, Nigerian millennials have flocked to facebook or twitter countless times; to campaign for or against issues that are dear to them. These days most Millennials are more likely to own a phone or a laptop than anything else. They focus a lot on creating new relationships online than in their immediate environment.

Today, more than ever, geography, culture and religion are more connected. With this level of magnitude; Millennials will be the driving force in the evolution of culture due to their access to unprecedented data and information. Hashtags continue to fly around, and the internet continues to carve a lasting place in the cultural habits of Millennials.

More importantly, this access to information has its downsides because there are people who hide behind a false sense of security provided by these tools and traits to spread anger, hate, cynicism and negativity. Nevertheless, Millennials are better positioned to foster a world of peace, understanding and harmony.
