Special Operations Brigade Deployed To Combat Lakurawas Sect In Sokoto And Kebbi States.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has deployed a Special Operations Brigade to intensify efforts against the Lakurawas sect operating in Sokoto and Kebbi States. This move builds on the achievements of Operation FOREST SANITY III, codenamed “CHASE LAKURAWAS OUT.”
On 13 December 2024, Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, addressed the troops on behalf of Theatre Commander Major General Oluyinka Soyele. He urged the soldiers to ensure the complete eradication of the sect while adhering to rules of engagement and prioritising the safety of law-abiding citizens.
Brigadier General Ajose expressed confidence in the troops, highlighting their specialised training and reminding them of their critical mission. “Nigerians are counting on your professionalism and resolve to eliminate this threat,” he stated.

The deployment follows successful precursor operations led by 8 Division troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA. These operations targeted key forests and enclaves in locations such as Rumji Dutse, East of Sarma, Tsauna and Bauni, Malgatawa, Gargao, and other areas in Illela, Tangaza, and Binji Local Government Areas.
During these operations, 22 camps were destroyed, numerous sect members were neutralised, and a significant cache of weapons and ammunition was recovered. This included four rifles, 409 rounds of PKT 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 94 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
The deployment of the Special Operations Brigade is expected to further disrupt the sect’s activities, restore security, and bring normalcy to affected communities in the North West region.
