Peruvians Claim Pope Leo XIV As One Of Their Own.
In Chiclayo, Peru, locals are celebrating Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, as one of their own. Before becoming the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV served as bishop in Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. During his time in the city, he endeared himself to the people with his humble and compassionate approach.
Pope Leo XIV’s tenure in Peru was marked by his efforts to connect with the people. He delivered help to flood-ravaged regions, sang Christmas songs, and blessed babies. Locals remember him in rubber boots, working alongside the Red Cross during a devastating flood, and on horseback in the countryside, wearing stylish aviator shades.
The people of Chiclayo have warmly embraced Pope Leo XIV, and it’s no surprise why. He spent much of his career outside the United States, arriving in northern Peru in 1985 during a time of internal conflict. He stayed in the region, becoming a Peruvian citizen in 2015 as required by a diplomatic treaty between Peru and the Vatican.
Pope Leo XIV developed a strong affinity for the region’s specialties, including fresh ceviche, stewed goat and squash, and duck and cilantro-infused rice. The coastal city of Chiclayo is known for its delicious cuisine, and the pope’s appreciation for local flavors has endeared him to the people.
As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, the people of Chiclayo are proud to claim him as one of their own. His connection to the city and its people will undoubtedly be remembered as a significant part of his legacy. The warm reception he received during a recent visit to Peru is a testament to the bond he formed with the people during his time as bishop.
