Ohanaeze Ndigbo Urges President Tinubu To Prioritise Full Reconstruction Of Enugu Airport Runway.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene by releasing funds for the comprehensive reconstruction of the runway at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.
The socio-cultural organisation, in a public statement, criticised the continued use of makeshift repairs and stressed the need for a lasting solution to ensure the safety and functionality of the airport.
“We need a lasting solution rather than the makeshift efforts we’ve seen over the years,” stated a spokesperson for the group, Mr Chukwu, who also urged the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to carry out thorough inspections of all airport runways nationwide to prevent potential accidents.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo further appealed to the Minister of Aviation, Chief Festus Keyamo (SAN), to acknowledge the incomplete state of the Enugu airport, noting that only minimal progress had been made under previous administrations.
“We appeal to Chief Festus Keyamo SAN, the Honourable Minister of Aviation, to acknowledge that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport is still incomplete, with minimal work done by previous federal administrations,” Chukwu said.
The group expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Enugu State Government, which has consistently supported improvements at the airport, and expressed optimism that the current federal administration would fast-track the completion and operationalisation of the facility in accordance with international standards.
“We look forward to the successful completion of the project within the stated timeframe,” the statement concluded.
The call from Ohanaeze Ndigbo comes amid growing concern from stakeholders about the state of aviation infrastructure in the South-East region, with many urging the federal government to give equal attention to projects critical to economic growth and public safety.
