Mason Greenwood Embraces Jamaican Roots With Citizenship And International Switch.
Former Manchester United star Mason Greenwood has been granted Jamaican citizenship and issued a Jamaican passport, paving the way for him to switch international allegiance from England to Jamaica. The 23-year-old Marseille forward, who made a single senior appearance for England in 2020, is now poised to represent the Reggae Boyz on the global stage, marking a significant milestone in his career.
The announcement, confirmed by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) on 6 August 2025, follows months of speculation and procedural delays. Greenwood’s eligibility to play for Jamaica stems from his familial ties, with his grandfather born on the Caribbean island and his British-born mother of Jamaican descent. The process was held up by a missing document required by Jamaica’s Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA), which has now been resolved, allowing Greenwood to complete his switch.

Greenwood’s move comes as part of Jamaica’s broader strategy, led by head coach Steve McClaren, to recruit UK-born players with Caribbean heritage. The forward, who has revitalised his career in France’s Ligue 1 with 15 goals in 24 matches for Marseille, is expected to bolster Jamaica’s squad for the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, starting in September 2025. The Reggae Boyz, placed in Group B alongside Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, and Bermuda, will face Bermuda away and host Trinidad and Tobago in the upcoming window.
The switch ends years of uncertainty surrounding Greenwood’s international future. After his sole England cap in a UEFA Nations League match against Iceland, his career faced challenges, including a suspension by Manchester United in 2022 following charges that were later dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses. Since then, Greenwood has rebuilt his reputation, first with a successful loan spell at Getafe, where he scored 10 goals in 36 appearances, and now at Marseille under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
JFF general manager Roy Simpson expressed delight at the development, noting Greenwood’s potential to elevate the team. “This is a proud moment for Jamaica, and we’re thrilled to welcome Mason to the Reggae Boyz family,” Simpson said. Fans have taken to social media to share their excitement, with many hopeful that Greenwood’s flair and goal-scoring prowess will shine in Jamaica’s iconic yellow, green, and black kit.
As Jamaica awaits FIFA’s final approval for the allegiance switch, the nation is buzzing with anticipation. Greenwood’s debut could come as early as the September qualifiers, offering a fresh chapter for both the player and Jamaican football as they aim for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
