Lagos To Hold Local Government Elections On 12 July.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially announced that local government elections will take place across the state on Saturday, 12 July 2025.
Mr Tope Ojo, LASIEC’s Head of Public Affairs, disclosed this development on Friday, confirming that the elections will cover 57 council chairmanship positions and 376 councillor seats. In the event of any inconclusive outcomes, a re-run has been scheduled for 19 July.
The elections will span across all 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State, encompassing a total of 376 wards.
According to LASIEC, the announcement comes as the tenure of the current local government administrations draws to a close. The commission has taken steps to ensure that the elections are conducted seamlessly, beginning with the official release of the Notice of Election.
To facilitate full participation, political parties have been invited to collect nomination forms for their candidates at LASIEC’s headquarters. A stakeholders’ meeting involving all registered political parties has also been scheduled for Tuesday.
Mr Ojo noted that the official Election Guidelines will be published on 17 April, with political campaigns set to commence on 18 April and conclude on 9 July. He added that nomination forms for both substituted and sole candidates must be submitted between 18 and 25 June.
Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), Chairman of LASIEC, has reassured residents and stakeholders of the commission’s commitment to a credible, inclusive, and transparent electoral process. She further urged all political actors to adhere strictly to the election timetable and guidelines.
The upcoming elections are seen as a pivotal step in maintaining democratic governance at the grassroots level in Lagos State.
