Lagos State Contingent Escapes Unharmed In Bus Accident En Route To National Sports Festival.
The Lagos State contingent travelling to the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State emerged unscathed from a bus accident earlier today. The incident occurred as the team journeyed to Abeokuta for the festival, which kicked off on 16 May and is set to conclude on 30 May 2025.
The mishap took place when the bus encountered mechanical difficulties, leading to the accident. Emergency services acted swiftly, ensuring all athletes and officials were safely evacuated. Medical assessments confirmed no fatalities, with all individuals reported to be in stable condition.
The National Sports Festival, fondly known as Nigeria’s “Unity Games,” is a biennial multi-sport event orchestrated by the Federal Government through the National Sports Commission. Since its inception in 1973, the festival has served as a platform to foster peace, promote cross-cultural bonds, and nurture athletic talent across Nigeria.
This year’s event, christened the “Gateway Games,” marks Ogun State’s second time hosting the festival, following its debut in 2006. Originally slated for January 2025, the event was rescheduled to May to allow for enhanced preparations and the implementation of recommendations from the joint technical committee.
The resilience of the Lagos State contingent, coupled with the prompt response of emergency services, ensures that the athletes can press on with their participation in the festival. This incident highlights the critical need for robust safety measures and preparedness at large-scale sporting events.
