Lagos Police Arrest Officer Filmed Assaulting Uber Driver In Viral Video.
The Lagos State Police Command has taken swift action following the circulation of a disturbing viral video showing a police officer violently assaulting an Uber driver. The officer, identified as Inspector Obic Modestus, has been arrested and is facing disciplinary measures, the police confirmed on Monday.
The video, widely shared on social media platform X by user Oyindamola, known as #dammiedammie35, captured the officer repeatedly striking the driver in a brutal attack. Oyindamola’s post, which called for the video to be shared widely, described the incident as an assault on “someone’s father” being beaten “like an animal.”
In response, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, announced that Inspector Modestus has been summoned by the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Lagos Police. The officer will be handed over to the Provost Department for appropriate disciplinary action.
“The Lagos State Police Command, under the leadership of CP Olohundare Jimoh, will not condone any form of incivility to members of the public,” Hundeyin stated, reinforcing the command’s commitment to accountability.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage online, with many Nigerians calling for justice and greater oversight of police conduct. The Lagos State Police Command’s prompt response has been noted as a step towards addressing public concerns over police brutality.
This case follows other recent incidents in Nigeria involving viral videos, including a debunked claim of a Borno attack and a clarification that men in another viral clip were Dangote Refinery workers, not assailants. In a separate development, police also reported the arrest of two suspected kidnappers and the rescue of a 14-year-old victim.
The Lagos State Police Command urged the public to continue reporting incidents of misconduct to ensure accountability and maintain trust in the force.
Punch.
