Kano NLC Endorses Governor Yusuf For Second Term, Hails Worker-Friendly Reforms.
The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown its weight behind Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for a second term, lauding his administration’s “unprecedented commitment” to the welfare of workers and pensioners. The endorsement was announced by NLC State Chairman, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa, during the 2025 International Workers’ Day celebrations at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
Addressing a vibrant crowd, Comrade Inuwa praised Governor Yusuf as a trailblazer, noting that he was the first Nigerian governor to implement the new N71,000 minimum wage. “This bold and historic decision, amidst rising living costs, underscores Governor Yusuf’s empathy and leadership,” Inuwa declared. “He has proven beyond doubt that he stands with the working class.”
The NLC also commended the governor for ensuring consistent and timely payment of salaries and pensions, alongside clearing N16 billion in unpaid retirement benefits inherited from the previous administration. The recent hike in the minimum monthly pension from N5,000 to N20,000 was highlighted as a transformative step towards restoring dignity for Kano’s senior citizens.
Further bolstering his pro-labour credentials, Governor Yusuf’s administration has recruited new teachers, approved staff promotions, and invested heavily in training and retraining public servants. “These are not mere promises fulfilled but a testament to the governor’s genuine concern for the labour force,” Inuwa said. “Governor Yusuf has earned the trust and unwavering support of workers across Kano.”
The announcement comes amid other notable achievements by the Yusuf administration, including a N1 billion investment in new water facilities to tackle shortages and a cabinet reshuffle aimed at enhancing governance. The NLC’s endorsement is seen as a significant boost for the governor’s re-election bid, cementing his reputation as a champion of workers’ rights and inclusive leadership in Kano State.
