The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the registration of 20,000 new voters in Ondo State as part of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) ahead of the November governorship election.

This surge in voter registration reflects a high level of enthusiasm among young Nigerians, suggesting that voter apathy will not be an issue in the upcoming election.

INEC Chairman Yakubu Mamoud made this statement during a visit to Akure on Sunday, June 2. He was in the state for a two-day visit to observe the CVR exercise and evaluate the electoral body’s preparedness for the governorship polls.

Mamoud noted that 17 political parties have conducted primaries to participate in the election. “We are here to observe the ongoing voters registration which started on the 27th of last month and we have made tremendous progress based on the daily report we are receiving from the state office,” he said.

He added that the high turnout, especially among young Nigerians, is evident in the registration figures, which include over 20,000 new registrants, excluding transfers, card collections, and replacements.

This enthusiasm indicates that voter apathy will likely not be a factor in the Ondo election.
