Kenya’s Harambee Stars delivered a historic performance on Sunday, 10 August 2025, defeating two-time champions Morocco 1-0 in a thrilling Group A match at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, held at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi. The victory, achieved despite playing the entire second half with 10 men, secured Kenya’s place in the quarter-finals in their tournament debut, sending the packed stadium into raptures.
The decisive moment came in the 42nd minute when forward Ryan Ogam capitalised on a rebound after Ben Stanley Omondi’s shot was blocked, firing a clinical left-footed strike past Moroccan goalkeeper Elmehdi Al Harrar. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters, but the mood shifted just before half-time when midfielder Chrispine Erambo was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a high challenge on Morocco’s Anas El Mahraoui.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Kenya, under the guidance of coach Benni McCarthy, displayed remarkable resilience and tactical discipline.
