Harambee Stars Stun Morocco With 10 Men To Secure CHAN 2024 Quarter-Final Spot

Harambee Stars Stun Morocco With 10 Men To Secure CHAN 2024 Quarter-Final Spot

Kenya’s Harambee Stars delivered a historic performance on Sunday, 10 August 2025, defeating two-time champions Morocco 1-0 in a thrilling Group A match at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, held at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi. The victory, achieved despite playing the entire second half with 10 men, secured Kenya’s place in the quarter-finals in their tournament debut, sending the packed stadium into raptures.

The decisive moment came in the 42nd minute when forward Ryan Ogam capitalised on a rebound after Ben Stanley Omondi’s shot was blocked, firing a clinical left-footed strike past Moroccan goalkeeper Elmehdi Al Harrar. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters, but the mood shifted just before half-time when midfielder Chrispine Erambo was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a high challenge on Morocco’s Anas El Mahraoui.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Kenya, under the guidance of coach Benni McCarthy, displayed remarkable resilience and tactical discipline. Goalkeeper Byrne Omondi was pivotal, making several crucial saves, including a stunning stop to deny Imad Riahi’s curling effort. The defensive unit, led by captain Johnstone Omurwa and bolstered by Michael Kibwage and Sylvester Owino, held firm against relentless Moroccan pressure, thwarting the Atlas Lions’ attempts to equalise despite their 74.8% possession and 14 shots.

The match was not without its challenges off the pitch. Hours before kick-off, chaotic scenes unfolded as thousands of fans, frustrated by long queues and ticketing issues, stormed gates and scaled fences to enter the stadium. Order was eventually restored, allowing the focus to shift to Kenya’s spirited performance.

With this victory, Kenya, who remain unbeaten with seven points from three matches, now top Group A. Their campaign began with a 1-0 win over DR Congo, followed by a 1-1 draw against Angola. The Harambee Stars are now one point away from securing the group leadership as they prepare to face Zambia in their final group match next Sunday. Morocco, whose 14-match unbeaten CHAN streak was ended, must defeat Angola to avoid an early exit.

Coach McCarthy praised his team’s grit, stating, “To play a whole half against a side of Morocco’s quality with 10 men and still win shows the heart of this team.” The win marks Kenya as only the third debutant nation to defeat a former CHAN champion, following DR Congo in 2009 and Libya in 2014, cementing a landmark moment in Kenyan football history.
