The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has declared Margaret Emefiele, the wife of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, wanted for her alleged involvement in financial crimes. Alongside Margaret Emefiele, the EFCC has also declared Eric Odoh, Anita Omoile, and Jonathan Omoile wanted for similar offences.
According to a statement released by the EFCC, the suspects are accused of conspiring with Godwin Emefiele to unlawfully convert significant amounts of money belonging to the Federal Government of Nigeria. Margaret Emefiele reportedly went into hiding following her husband’s arrest and subsequent court charges.
The EFCC has published the suspects’ mugshots on its website and social media platforms, urging anyone with information on their whereabouts to contact the nearest EFCC Command or police station.
This development marks a significant development in the ongoing probe of past and present officials accused of corruption. It is notable for the inclusion of spouses alongside individuals standing trial, which is relatively rare in such cases.
Godwin Emefiele’s troubles began after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu on June 9, 2023, which led to his arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lagos. He was later transferred to Abuja and handed over to the EFCC, where he faced charges related to money laundering and fraud.
