Cristiano Ronaldo Makes History with Sixth European Championship Appearance.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has etched his name in the record books by appearing in his sixth European Championship, a first in the history of the tournament. The 39-year-old forward was in the starting lineup for Portugal’s Group F opener against the Czech Republic in Germany on Tuesday.
Ronaldo’s remarkable achievement is complemented by his international team-mate, Pepe, who also started the match. At the age of 41 years and 113 days, Pepe has become the oldest player in the history of the Euros.
Prior to the 2024 tournament, Ronaldo had already established himself as the leading goalscorer in European Championship history with 14 goals and the player with the most appearances, totalling 25 matches. His participation in the 2024 Euros marks an incredible run that began in 2004, making him the first player to feature in six separate tournaments.
Before the match at Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena, Ronaldo’s international team-mate, Ruben Dias, spoke highly of his ongoing contribution to the team. “Cristiano represents the idea that it’s possible to dream and achieve great things,” said the Manchester City defender. “It’s a pleasure to have him with us. Beyond all those little big things I’ve mentioned, it’s important that he’s here with us at this stage of his career.”
What Records Can Ronaldo Break in Germany?
Since his debut in 2004, Ronaldo has scored at every European Championship he has participated in, and he aims to continue that streak at this tournament. A goal in the 2024 Euros would not only maintain this run but could also see him become the oldest goalscorer in European Championship history.
Additionally, Ronaldo is eyeing another prestigious record. He hopes to emulate former Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas by captaining his team to two European Championship victories. Casillas led Spain to titles in 2008 and 2012, while Ronaldo was the captain when Portugal triumphed in 2016.
As Portugal progresses in the tournament, all eyes will be on Ronaldo to see if he can add more records to his illustrious career and inspire his team to another European Championship glory.
