House Of Representatives Orders Nationwide Ban On Pornographic Websites.
Nigeria’s House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce an immediate shutdown of all pornographic websites across the country.
The decision, announced on Tuesday, mandates internet service providers to block access to such sites, marking a significant move to regulate online content in Nigeria.
The motion, sponsored by Katsina lawmaker Dalhatu Tafoki, was presented as a measure to “protect societal values.” Tafoki emphasised the need to safeguard the moral fabric of the nation, particularly in light of growing concerns over the impact of explicit content on young people and society at large.
Lawmakers supported the directive, urging swift action from the NCC to ensure compliance. They stressed that unrestricted access to pornographic material poses risks to social and cultural norms, necessitating stricter regulation.
With this resolution, internet service providers are expected to take immediate steps to block pornographic websites, aligning with the House’s directive. The move has sparked discussions on internet regulation and digital rights, with stakeholders expected to weigh in on its implementation and implications.
